Boulder, Colorado
This past weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to be part of a very special Colorado event at Gateway Amusement Park, where local kids, sponsored by the Autism Society of Boulder County and the Boulder Police Department, came together for a day of fun, laughter, and unforgettable memories.
From the moment the kids arrived, there was an electric sense of excitement in the air. The park, usually buzzing with visitors, felt even more vibrant as these kids, each with their own unique personalities and needs, stepped into an environment where they could just be kids. With the support of the Autism Society and Boulder Police Department, the day was carefully crafted to ensure every child felt safe, welcomed, and encouraged to explore the rides, games, and activities at their own pace.

One of the most heartwarming moments was watching kids who had never experienced an amusement park ride before, or who had felt overwhelmed by large crowds, begin to relax and enjoy themselves. The volunteers, police officers, and staff were right there with them, offering gentle encouragement and making sure everyone felt comfortable. There was a sense of belonging that permeated the day, no one was left out, and everyone was embraced for who they were.
The Boulder Police Department’s involvement was particularly special. Officers, who might typically be seen in a uniform of authority, were transformed into partners in fun, joining kids on rides, playing games, and creating a sense of security and friendship.
As the day came to a close, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the joy and connection that was made possible through community collaboration. It wasn’t just a day at the amusement park, it was a day where kids with autism were given the opportunity to experience joy, inclusion, and, most importantly, the freedom to be themselves.
