I recently photographed a family portrait session in the Boulder area that perfectly reflects what I love about creating Colorado portraits. When Jing first reached out, she asked if she could bring her dog, Charlie. I immediately said yes. What I didn’t anticipate was just how exceptional Charlie would be in front of the camera.

From the very beginning, Charlie showed up as the definition of a very good boy. He sat on command, looked cheerfully straight into the lens, and waited patiently between photos. Time and again, he lifted his eyes toward Jing, her mom, or her daughter with complete trust and affection, quietly checking in as if waiting to be reminded that he was doing everything right.

Because Charlie stayed so calm and attentive, the session flowed effortlessly. We moved easily between individual portraits, candid moments, and relaxed group images without feeling rushed. That ease allowed everyone to stay present, which always leads to more natural photographs. Instead of forcing poses, we let moments unfold organically.

What stood out to me most was the bond this family shares with Charlie. He isn’t just included in their Colorado portraits; he plays an essential role in how they relate to one another. Their connection feels grounded in care, trust, and affection, and that dynamic came through clearly in every frame.

This session reinforced why I love photographing Colorado portraits. The most meaningful images don’t come from rigid structure or perfection. They come from comfort, connection, and relationships that feel honest and lived-in. Sometimes with a very good dog right at the center of it all.
